Nepal is known for its natural splendour, rich culture and friendly people. It shares its borders in the North with China's Xizang Autonomous Region (Tibet) and on the other three sides- South, East and West, with India. It covers an area of 147,181 square kilometres and has a population of over 30 million. Apart from Mount Everest, the highest peak in the world, Nepal is home to seven of the world’s highest mountains. While the Himalayas run through the North and West part of the country, the humid and fertile Terai plains lie in its southern region. Why Nepal? Nepal was chosen as the venue for this conference in order to ensure maximum participation from South Asian countries, especially Pakistan, Sri Lanka, Bangladesh and India. Nepal has also recently seen the rise of various progressive social movements working to build violence-free communities. The country has witnessed landmark achievements to secure the rights of marginalised women, including the 2007 Supreme Court ruling that asked the government to formulate laws to guarantee the rights of sexual minorities. A country that is making strides in guaranteeing the rights of marginalised women, Nepal is an ideal venue for Count Me In! |
